The community card poker game of Texas Hold ‘em intensifies on the strategy front once the flop round takes place and the three face up cards have been dealt to the board. The most important tactics for winning players at this stage of the game is to quickly calculate their pot odds before deciding their next betting action. Once the flop cards have been dealt either a player has an undeniably strong hand with which he can win, or with which he hopes to win, even though turn and river cards are pending to be dealt or he has a sufficiently good drawing hand which he is confident he can improve in the subsequent rounds of play.

Players who have a made hand after the flop cards have been dealt can bet or raise with a view to win the pot outright at that stage of the game since with progress of play, opponents can improve their hands. If the player’s hand is not yet made but is drawing, it is important that he be able to calculate his pot odds, which if favorable he can call or if it is unfavorable, he should fold his hand. To understand one’s pot odds it is also required that the player makes a note of the possible outs, drawing which would make his hand the best possible.

So, if the player’s hole cards are a king and jack and the board after flop is queen, 10 and 7, the player’s possible outs are four ace cards and four 9. The percentage of drawing an out is calculated by doubling the total number of outs and adding two. So, the player has 18% chance of getting an out. The maximum bet that can be called can now be computed by multiplying the percentage with pot size. So, the player can call a maximum bet of $36 for a $200 pot. If now the ongoing bet is greater than $36, he should fold his hand.

The first and foremost thing to remember while playing a game of Texas Hold ‘em is to determine what is the object of play. If a player is playing only for the fun of it, he should only stake that much amount of money in the game that he can safely lose and yet it would be exciting for him if he can end up being a winner with that kind of investment.

However, for those gamblers who are setting out to play with the purpose of returning as a winner and make some cash, it is important that he stakes for high limits if he wants to win a big pot. It has been found that $200 big bets are an optimum amount of shorthand play. So, if the limit game is being played for $5/$10, the player should be ready to stake $2000 so as to stand the chance of making some sizeable winnings.

It is absolutely crucial for players to be able to read their hands and recognize their actual and potential strength and able to distinguish between good and weak hands. Although the number of players participating in the game is also important, for a rookie Texas Hold ‘em player in a fixed limit game, starting with low limits of $1-2 is advisable.

The pre-flop round gives the players two hole cards and whether one should raise depends on what kind of hand he has been dealt with. If a player has a premium hand, such as a pair of ace or king or queen or jack or 10 card or an ace card with a king or queen card, he can safely raise the ongoing bet. If a player has a hand of ace and jack, king-queen, queen-jack, jack-10, pair of 9 or 8 or 7 card, and if belonging to the same suit then 10 and 9 card and an ace card with any rank except the face cards, he should wait for the flop cards to be dealt and can safely call the current bet one or two times.

Some tournaments are quite long that goes on for the entire day. Here, regular short breaks are given to the players to freshen up. However, there are occasions where unscheduled breaks are also taken – be it taking a phone call or taking a quick sip.

If you miss a hand or two during a tournament, do you lose a lot? — Perhaps not. Many experts even say to take a quick walk when you are going downswing to brighten things up. But, this may not be the case if you are in the money.

Surveys show that a player can lose up to $10,000 per hand if he misses playing while in the money. In a competitive environment you cannot afford to lose money by not playing hands.

Here are some tips to highlight when exactly you should not miss hands. Firstly, missing any hand in the beginning of the game does not cost much. Secondly, missing hands in a game where there is a large prize pool is quite expensive. If you are in the money, it is all the more important that you stay in the tournament.

Thirdly, you may lose a big chunk of your chips if you miss hands while having a short stack. Lastly, as the tourney progresses, your chances of losing money become high if you miss hands.

To ensure that the disadvantages of taking unscheduled breaks are minimized, some tournaments allow short five minutes unscheduled breaks. Only if this facility is abused, do the directors of the tournaments revoke the facility.

Today, large numbers of tourneys that have high stakes are being played in the poker world. Missing hands during the right moment can be uncomfortable and expensive. Ensure that you stay while the big pot is being developed so that you don’t miss hands and your money.

People do get excited when they get a single ace. They start betting and even dreaming of winning the game. The reality is however, far from the rosy picture they see about single ace.

If you have a single ace with no kicker it is quite possible you would not be able to tackle the situation when raised or re-raised. If you don’t flop an ace you may lose the game. If you flop successfully you can be beaten by another player.

Playing single ace from any position is a mistake which many experts point out. The point is that there may be other players having ace and better cards to support it. In a game of ten players, be sure that there is 75 percent chance that some other player would have an ace.

The key point of success here is the kicker. If you have a low kicker, the other player with a strong kicker can beat you.

Sometimes suited ace can help you get an edge over your contender. In a late position, you can play a suited ace against an unraised pot. The flush would help you win the game. If you play suited ace from an early position, you are not likely to win the game.

However, while playing in a low-limit game, you can come across novice players and maniacs who do not have a strong policy to rely on. In such a case, it would be better to use single ace with a strong kicker as your tool to win the game.

You would surely get players who would not fold with a pair of aces even though they have a weak kicker. They would call you at the river in a desperate attempt to win the game. Here you need to checkmate them with your ace and strong kicker.

Playing late is often formidable. Not only can you afford to miss hands, you also cannot afford to play too loose. If you do either of these, you are sure to be totally devastated.

Playing late in a tourney means that you are already in the money and need to play with few top players only. You can be sure that all maniacs have already been eliminated from the group.

Consider a scenario where there are three players left to complete the game. You are one of the players having highest number of chips. The second player is an aggressive player while the third one is a tight passive player.

When the game proceeds, the second player started betting at most hands. He also started getting the chips partly from the third player and partly from you. Soon the second player became the chip leader though he was playing a heads-up strategy. After few more rounds, the second player won the game.

Where do you think you lost? You gave away your chips quite easily. There were occasion when risks had to be taken. The second player who got away with the chips could afford to take risks while other players had to watch.

Though there were many traps where you could have thwarted the progress of the second player, you could not do anything as you had to avoid a bad beat.

All in all, aggression is not the only thing that can help you win. While playing late in the game, you need to be constantly up in your feet. Either you need to save your chips or take chips from other players if you wish to win the game. Any slight lackadaisical approach would ruin your chances of winning the top position in game.
